There are many tools that can help you in traffic analysis and SEO audit. But in this SEMrush review article, I'm going to talk about the most popular traffic analysis tool, which is SEMrush Traffic Analytics.
Semrush is one of the best and well-optimized content marketing platforms that offers over 50 analytics tools in a single package for SEO, content marketing, advertising, competitive research, reporting, and social media management.

First, we're going to know how Semrush's Traffic Analytics tool works. And It is one of the best tools of this Semrush review which gives insights about your competitor's websites.

In terms of competitive analysis tools, Semrush is a James Bond who gives any data about competitors. It provides you a bigger picture than SimilarWeb and Ahref!
The ultimate purpose of using competitive analysis tools is to get detailed insights into the competitor’s traffic and audience so that you can build your marketing strategies to generate better ROI.
This is one of the most important and useful tools within the Semrush review and platform. If you want to know your website's traffic, then you need to see traffic analytics where you will know how and from where traffic comes on your website.

Semrush categorized the entire site traffic into 5 different channels — direct, search, referral, paid, and social. Like Semrush, Similarweb also resulted in channel-by-channel traffic breakdowns including two extra channels (mail and display ads).
This means you can do everything with one subscription of Semrush, But look at Audience Overlap, which allows you to see if some and same visitors of your website go to several websites (or not) and it makes conclusions on how companies win and lose their audiences.
Sad to say, the audience overlap feature not available in any other SEO tool. But this is an amazing feature in Semrush Traffic Analytics tool but with Semrush .Trends !!!
Understanding how much traffic comes to your site, the average time that’s spent on your site, and even your site’s bounce rate helps with boosting your site’s SEO. Remember lots of traffic and site engagement equal higher search rankings.
On top of that, Semrush also exposes how much your competitors are spending on ads. And it comes with information about the leading paid search opponents, plus their corresponding primary keywords, campaign framework, and overall PPC activities.
My favorite feature about Semrush Traffic Analytics is filtration by traffic source. This is a feature you can't get in any other tool like SimilarWeb, and Ahref.
Now Semrush comes with a brand new tool which is Market Explorer, and this tool reveals top players in any industry, analyze a new market or niche. If you're a new marketer in the industry then this tool can be game-changing for you!
Following are the things that you can do in Semrush's Market Explorer:
- You can get to know your competitor's strategies that they applied in any market
- You can compare their online market shares and growth rate
- You can also analyze seasonal market trends and evergreen strategies.
Apart from this, Semrush offers Growth Quadrant in which they divided marketers into 4 types as follow:

Let's first know, What is keyword research exactly?
Keyword research is the process of finding the keywords for your business or blog and understanding how you are ranking or could rank for these keywords on Google.
Keyword research is most important for any digital marketing campaign or blogging. It can tell you what people exactly are searching for, rather than what you think they are searching for.
It is important to identifying keywords to use in blogs that can drive traffic to your website! But you need a powerful keyword research tool for this, and SEMrush's Keyword Magic Keyword tool is enough for you.
By the way, the Semrush suite comes with a Keyword Magic Tool that you can use for all keyword-related research. As well as, There are 4 keyword research tools in the SEO section, namely: “Keyword Overview”, “Keyword Magic Tool”, “Keyword Manager”, “Organic Traffic Insights”.
Perhaps, Keyword Magic Tool is my favorite keyword research tool in the Semrush suite. The total number of keywords in Semrush's software suite now exceeds 20 billion and that makes it the largest keyword database in the market.
With over 20 billion keywords is in its database, you're sure to find tons of keywords for your business. The keyword research tool is probably the biggest reason why I invest money into SEMrush.
The Keyword Magic Tool is an easy-to-use keyword research tool that provides all the keywords you need to build an effective SEO or PPC campaign. With this tool, you can generate tons of long-tail keywords for your seed keyword(s).
To use this tool, navigate to Keyword Analytics and select Keyword Magic Tool.
Enter your seed keyword in the search box, and then hit the apply button. The Keyword Magic Tool will then automatically calculate keyword potential for you, presenting you with data on important metrics such as:
- Keyword Difficulty
- CPC (Cost per click)
Let’s take a look at the keyword “Content Marketing”.
As you can see, from a quick search I got over 116,380 keywords related to "content marketing".
Instantly, The Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool gives you a massive list of keyword variations including long-tail keywords and their volume, trend, keyword difficulty, CPC, competition, and the current SERP features.
This is incredibly helpful, and amazing. Especially for new websites, which focus on questions that people type into the search engines and it is a good way to get traffic at the early stages.
I get helpful data such as:
- Long-tail keywords to use
- Average monthly volume of searches
- A trend graph
- Keyword difficulty
- CPC (average cost to advertise for the keyword)
- Competition for entering Adwords auctions
- Number of SERP Features found for the keyword
Semrush's principal objective is to help you discover the most strategic keywords for your website. And for the best results, all keywords are analyzed based on their respective search volume, CPC, competitive density, and overall traffic.
In addition, You’ll also get information about other websites that rank organically on the selected keywords.
Keyword ranking depends on your domain and its authority, and you can select keywords with a level of difficulty and volume that’s right for your website. New websites should look for low-difficulty keywords and mature or old websites should look for high volume keywords.
Apart from this, Semrush comes with Keyword Analyzer Tool which you can use to analyze various keywords.
From here you can do below things:
- segment keywords further for analysis
- export them to a spreadsheet
- send them to other tools like the position tracking tool.
Also, You can make use of the filters, sort the columns, and much more. Semrush also displays the different types of keywords like questions, broad match, phrase match, exact match, and also related keywords.
Added to these two, with Semrush you can also implement Keyword Gap Analysis.
This is one of the newest tools of Semrush, and With it, you can easily find out how you stack up against those targeting the same keywords.
This helps you to understand what are the keywords that your competitors are ranking in common, but your website seems totally missing. Because you need more authority, and backlinks to outrank that website.
In fact, you can compare your keyword strategies against up to five competitors. Sometimes it’s easier to compare yourself against just one so you don’t become confused with too much conflicting data.
You can even refine your comparison results based on device type, date range, country, and type of keywords (organic, paid, or product listing ad).
Once you have got the keywords, can add these keywords directly into Keyword Analyzer to get more in-depth information on the keywords.
In addition to these data, Semrush will also offer you a long list of long-tail keywords for the seed keyword(s) which can be export onto a spreadsheet for manual sorting.
If you want to measure only the keyword difficulty score of the keywords, you can enter them in bulk under the Keyword Difficulty feature.
It also displays what SERP features are present for the keyword and also the trend graph.
Well, we recommend you to do manual keyword difficulty analysis before deciding to create content around a keyword as the scores returned can be quite contextual and have differences.
Especially, I like Semrush Keyword Magic Tool and Keyword Gap Analysis tool because of their accurate results.
3. Link Building Tools
Link building is the process of acquiring hyperlinks (also known as “backlinks”) from other websites to your website with the goal of improving search engine visibility.
Common link-building strategies include content marketing, building useful tools, email outreach, broken link building, and public relations.
Do you know, Why link building is important?
Link building is important because links are one of the major ranking factors of search engines. Search engines such as Google look at the quantity of high-quality inbound links to a webpage when they crawl. The higher quality links a webpage has, the better it will rank.
Well, Link building is also known as Backlinks! Now I will use backlinks word instead of link building, so that you may understand very well.
Semrush offers you 5 backlink building tools in the link building section, and by using these tools you can create many backlinks opportunities for your website.
If I talk honestly, so I don’t like backlink building. I choose to spend my time creating quality and highly linkable content. But in order to get higher rank in Google's SERP, then you need to build backlinks.
Backlinks help you determine the quality of your site’s pages. The more people link to your site’s content, the more authoritative you become in your industry. When this happens, search engines like Google reward you with higher rankings because it recognizes the value of your website.
Within link building section, Semrush offers 5 backlink building tool as follow:
- Backlink Audit Tool
- Backlink Analytics
- Backlink Gap
- Bulk Backlink Analysis
- Link Building Tool
Although, While I don’t like the activity of backlink building, I like observe high authority domains pointing to my website. I typically check which articles those high authority sites are linking to, and try to create similar articles that meet that quality level.
Well, now I'm going to review Semrush's Backlink Analytics tool which is the best tool for link building,
Backlink data of other website is important to build backlinks for your websites and every person who is optimizing their website for search engines should look at this diligently.
Semrush helps you analyze the authority of your domain, or any other domain. In the above image, I analysed Amazon.com domain on Semrush Backlinks reasrch tool, and you can see Amazon has 5.5 Billion backlinks.
With Semrush, you’ll be able to view things such as new and lost backlinks, the number of backlinks that you have, referring domains, backlink anchor text, and your pages with the highest number of backlinks. I must say, this information is incredibly valuable to have right at your hand with Semrush tools.
For example, you can get information like:
- Authority score (overall quality and influence of SEO)
- Number of referring domains
- Number of backlinks
- Monthly visits
- Top anchor text
- Backlink types (image, frame, text, or form)
Want to see how many backlinks are in the backlink profile of Amazon.com? So, Click on the Backlinks tab:
Even you can also see which websites given you backlinks. Here you will see the types of sites citing your website’s content. You can even click on them and visit them to see just how your content is being shared with others.
If you create a high-quality article, then some bloggers can link your article to their websites.
Mainly, Backlink divided into two types:
- No-follow backlink
- Do-follow backlink
Both backlink types are important for your SERP ranking but do-follow backlinks are most important. Now, I mentioning that I don’t like the activity of collecting backlinks by emailing people and asking for link insertions.
Well, Link Building tool gives you email addresses of many website owner, so you can outreach them. This saves your lot of time in searching email addresses and this means you can do many outreach campaign.
For outreach, you’ll be using Gmail. So the limit will be 500 emails per day. However, if you consider using GSuite this limit can be raised.
Basically, this means you don't need to pay for another tool to do this such as Snov.io, and Hunter.io.
Naturally, it’s not going to give you the email address of their CEO. Overall, the data that SEMrush provides for backlinks is very accurate and complete. They crawl over 17.2 billion URLs per day, that's why they can give you accurate data.
In the free version of SEMrush, you can import up to 100 domains to the campaign. In any of the paid plans, you can import up to 10,000 domains into the tool.
If you want to do a backlink audit of your own website, SEMrush has a really good Backlink Audit tool.
You first need to set up your domain for the audit. It’ll analyze the nature and toxicity of the backlinks a site has. It also offers you integration with Google Search Console to make sure that none of your backlinks will be missed in the audit.
If you are doing an audit for the first time, it takes around 2 minutes depending on your site to analyze the backlinks, toxic scores, and also potential link networks.
You can also individually go through each of the backlinks that Semrush has analyzed and examined the toxic scores.
You can either decide to keep the backlinks or delete them by adding them to the disavow list.
Conducting Backlink Audit regularly is very crucial, especially if you are engaged in active backlink building and also to protect yourself from negative SEO.
The spammy toxic backlinks really will have a negative effect on your search visibility.
However, this all link building tools comes with one subscription of Semrush. And you can buy their any subscription plan, but I recommend Pro plan for blogger, and Guru plan for large websites.
4. Semrush SEO Toolkit
Semrush is most popular for its SEO related features. In this section of the review, let’s walk through the features that SEMrush offers in it’s SEO Toolkit.
In SEO toolkit, you have following tools which you can use grow your online career:
- Competitive Research
- Keyword Research
- Link Building
- Rank Tracking
- On-page and Technical SEO
I have described some tools earlier, so now I'm going to talk about Rank Tracking, Competitive Research, On-page and Technical SEO.
Here you can analyze any of the domains, do organic research, display traffic analytics, do keyword gap and backlink gap analysis.
There are 5 competitive research tools in the SEO section namely, “Domain overview”, “ Traffic Analytics”, “Organic Research”, “Keyword Gap”, and “Backlink Gap”. And In this section, I'm only going to talk about Domain Overview, Organic Research, and Backlink Gap.
These tools give you useful information about your competitors. You’ll be able to track an estimate of their monthly traffic, average visit duration, and bounce rates. You’ll also be able to see from which countries your competitors are receiving traffic. This will help you to get an understanding of their local market maturity.
It must be noted that this data will become more accurate as the website of your competitors is maturing. For relatively new websites, this data will become less accurate. I usually take this data with a grain of salt but it helps to give you a general idea of the traffic performance of your competitors.
The easiest way to land a #1 position on Google is through featured snippets. Even if your domain authority is not very high yet, being listed in a featured snippet means that you’re on the top of the search engine results page (SERP).
Under the Domain Overview section, you can enter any domain name and see all the essential data regarding the domain name on one screen.
It’s typically the starting point whenever you are doing any competitor site research.
You’ll get to know the site’s traffic, paid traffic (if any), backlinks, organic traffic graph, top organic keywords, referring domains, and much more.
At this point, you can dig deep into any of the metrics.
If you want to display the mobile analytics of any site, you can select Mobile under the Device dropdown.
It’ll display you all the mobile rankings and traffic data.
In the Organic Research section of the competitive tools, you can research what are all the keywords the domain or a particular web page is ranking on Google. You can determine the position changes, competitors, trends data, and much more.
You will also be able to find out which featured snippets your competitors are winning and in how much traffic that is resulting. This is very useful information. Below, an example of the featured snippets in which YouTube is winning.
Now, if you go to Google and type in search box “How to use Semrush”, you’ll in fact see the featured snippet.
If you see which featured snippets your competitors are winning, you’ll get a lot of information about their content marketing strategy. You can use this to your advantage.
Naturally, featured snippets are not the only feature on the search engine results pages. You’ll also get access to features such as “People also ask”, “ featured videos”, “FAQ”. For the full list, see below. This information is incredibly useful. However, in my niche the featured snippet is the more valuable.
The competitive section also allows you to see which keywords bring in the most traffic for your competitors and if their position is changing on the search engine results page. If you see a sudden increase, they must have done something right so it’s useful to analyze those articles to check how they increase the ranking position.
It also shows you the number of branded searches and unbranded searches for your site. You’ll get to know how many people are searching for navigational keywords in Google especially to land on your site.
You can spy the improve/decline in keyword rankings of your competitors.
Semrush also enables you to track the ranking of your pages for the keywords you are targeting.
First, you need to set up tracking for your site.
You can also import the backlinks from Semrush website data, Google Analytics or also you can import a file.
Once the report is generated, you can take a look at where your site is ranking for the keywords, and also analyze if your site is featured in Google snippets.
On-Page & Tech SEO
Commonly, you simply can’t get away with just writing good content to improve your rankings on search engines. Your website also needs to be technically optimized.
With these features, you can do an on-page SEO audit and also analyze the technical SEO of your site.
It analyzes the various aspects of your site including site structure, internal linking, broken links, crawl depth, speed, and many others.
You can set this Site Audit to run periodically so that SEMrush sends you audit reports straight to your inbox.
What I like about the Site Audit tool of SEMrush is that it automates some of the work. Of course, if something is wrong, you still need to fix it yourself, but you can track performance automatically.

Click on your website and you’ll be able to deep dive into some details. The features offered by Semrush when it comes to SEO audit are really commendable.
Because, even the often-overlooked features like robots.txt analysis, HTTPS health, sitemaps, orphaned pages, htaccess analysis, page speed, crawl depth, and many others are also included.
You don’t need to have your SEO audit checklist, and Semrush will analyze all of them for you.
Along with their Website audit tool, you have tools like SEO content template, on-page SEO checker, log file analyzer (advanced crawl analysis), listing management, features under this section.
Semrush also has a tool called the On-Page SEO Checker. It gives you a list of pages that you should consider updating. Moreover, it actually gives you a list of ideas on what to do!
If you’re using Trello, then you can export these ideas directly to Trello.
It analyzes your content, keywords, and backlinks against various competitors and offers you actionable strategies to implement on your content.
One of my favorite features is the top 10 benchmarking.
The tool will give ideas in the following categories:
- Strategy ideas
- Backlink ideas
- Technical SEO ideas
- User Experience ideas
- SERP feature ideas
- Sematic ideas
- Content ideas
These ideas are generally a good place to start brainstorming when considering to update certain pages to get more traffic. It’s up to you to analyze whether the expected traffic increase is worth the input of effort.
It lets you analyze your word count, readability, video usage, and many other factors to the top 10 ranking web pages for the keyword. It helps you easily determine the commonalities between all the top-ranking web pages.
I also liked their Optimization ideas. They offer you SEO optimization ideas for specific topics on your blog.
5. Semrush's Content Marketing Toolkit
In addition to providing keyword research tools, Semrush also provides you a suite of ‘Content Marketing’ tools with Guru plan and Business plan.
These allow you to:
- identify new topics to write about
- audit your existing content from an SEO point of view
- identify keywords that your comeptitors are using in their posts
- monitor mentions of your brand.
As well In this toolkit, you’ll be getting all the features you ever need to create highly SEO-optimized content for your website.
Within the Content Marketing toolkit, Semrush offers the below tools:
- SEO Topic Research
- SEO Content Template
- Brand Monitoring
- Content Analyzer
- SEO Writing Assistant
My favorite tool in Semrush’s content marketing toolkit is the ‘SEO writing assistant’ which allows you to copy and paste the content into Semrush for review and you can also write copy within Semrush and get real-time advice on it.
Once you’ve done that you’ll get suggestions on ways you can improve its performance in search results. These include encouragements to increase or decrease word count; recommendations that you add certain keywords to your text; and warnings if your content looks like it has been scraped from other sites.
However, it would be nice to be able to simply paste a URL from your site in and get these suggestions!
SEO Topic Research
If you’re ever lacking the inspiration to come up with new topics to write about then the topic research tool has got you covered.
With this tool, you just need to enter the topic that you’d like to write an article about.
The topic research feature of Semrush is really useful. It lets you easily analyze the subtopics of a topic, characteristics of most backlinked articles, etc.
I found the “cards” view to be extremely useful when outlining what content needs to be present in the article.
At some stage, I was writing a lot about B2B events, so let’s take that keyword as an example for this review. When you first enter the topic research tool you need to select a keyword that you want to research. Again, let’s go for “B2B events”.
This tool will then present you with cards of keyword ideas and it will also give you insight into the search volume.
In the above example, you can see that just by looking at the cards, you can easily get some ideas on what to include in the content.
When you click on Social Media card, after that Semrush shows you additional information about Social Media topic.
Apart from this, It will give you headlines ideas from existing posts and also a list of questions that people ask on the search engines.
SEO Content Templates
SEO Content Template helps you to a great extent in preparing your blog post outline and also to write your content effectively. It suggests the competitor content, semantic keywords, and also competitor keywords you need to include in your blog posts to rank them higher.
Well, Semrush comes with an SEO writing assistant for Google Docs to check the content in real-time for SEO friendliness.
Next up in this Semrush review is the brand monitoring tool. This tool checks the web to see if your brand name is mentioned in articles. It is similar to tools like BrandMentions and Mention Do.
It alerts you whenever your brand is mentioned anywhere on the internet. It also lets you know the brand mention sentiment. This feature is very helpful when you are running a reputation management agency or offering such services.
With the brand monitoring tool, you can select the countries that you want to analyze. This even helps field marketing teams to see if their local PR efforts are hitting the ground level.
